Top Tips For Starting Your First Business

There is no doubt, starting a business is nerve-wracking, I have experienced this first-hand too. If you are thinking about dipping your toe in the business world for the first time, I have compiled 7 top tips based on my own experience to help you. Let’s jump right in…

Record Everything

One of the most vital things you can do to get your business off to a good start is keep your records in order to avoid problems down the road.  Keep receipts for everything, record your sales and it is strongly advisable to hire the services of an accountant to help you with this. Devise a Marketing plan

So, you have an irresistible product or service to bring to the market but how are you going to get it in front of the right people? A solid marketing plan is one of the fundamental things you can create to get your business going and keep gaining momentum. Need some help? Reach out to me here.

Business Planning

Just like your business and you as an individual, your business plan will evolve over time as your goals and strategies change. Does your original plan need updating or a tweak to realign the goals of your business? Remember, change and growth is a positive step.

Pick the Right Team

A good, solid team around you is important to get the job done and keep morale levels up as your business develops. Build a strong team at the start with the right people for the right job and they will work with you as your business grows and fluctuates.

Be Patient and Take a Breather

Your business is YOUR baby and although it’s tempting to live, eat and breath it 24/7, this is not healthy long-term. Businesses take a lot of work but try to take a breather and balance your work and home life to avoid burning out. Starting a business also requires patience, while you might not see the results immediately, they will pay off. See my blog: ‘How is Your Work Life Balance’ for more tips

Keep Learning

Stay curious. A successful business doesn’t stop at a great product or service. It pays to look around you, move with the times, spot industry trends and keep an eye on what your competitors are doing and find your own strategy. How can you stand out more than them? What can you do different?

Smash Your Branding

Your brand is the first thing potential customers will see and one of the things they remember most about your business. Did you ever hear the saying, “people judge you in the first three seconds of meeting you?” The same goes for your brand. Make it stand out and keep it relevant.

There are a million and one ways to stay unique. Find your USP! For some, it’s a hot pink product in a sea of pastel colours, for others, it’s what YOU bring to the business, exceptional people skills or a quirky approach, for example.
