Which Website Platform Is Best For Your Business?

If you are looking for a new website for your business, you have hundreds of different web platform providers to choose from. You then have thousands of web designers to consider as well. Ultimately the choice is 100% yours as to which route you take.

So, there is never going to be shortage of options I can assure you.

In this week’s blog, I am focusing on the premise of ‘what is best for YOU and YOUR business?’

Let’s look at an example. You have your business concept or plan in place and ready to make a start on a new website. You have your logo and brand identity created. You may have even made a start in creating your social media channels to use. Now you need a website.

In my opinion, you have two choices:

1. You build it yourself

2. You hire a web designer

The process of getting a new website for your business does not have to be complicated. Even though you will need to consider a suitable domain name that is available, web hosting and creating and managing your email accounts. It is at this stage when you may start to seek recommendations from friends which could overload you with information. Everyone knows a web designer don’t they?

Let’s look at these individually:

DIY Web Design

A few years back, there was an influx of web builder platforms like WIX, GoDaddy and Weebly that all offer a ‘do it yourself’ platform. This means that you can create a website yourself, sign up for a domain name and host the website all under one roof and normally with one monthly fee. These companies work on a sheer volume of numbers. They offer guidance and tutorials as well to help you along the way. If you are working to a tight budget, this may be the route that is perfect for you.

You will need to work within their parameters when it comes to the vuild of the site and you could have a website live in a matter of days or even hours. These platforms have vastly improved in the last few years making it easier for you to build your own DIY business website.

However, (and there is always a ‘however’) you will have to dedicate the time to build this for yourself.

I remember talking to a client a few years ago who said that it seemed pretty simple, but he was a plumber and had no time to build his own website because he was busy running his business, nor the expertise to make it look great or any interest in doing so. He said that “You never get a carpenter in to fix your boiler”. This is very true! Would you agree?

I must say at this point say that if you are one of those people who take this route then this is great. It may sound strange that I am applauding people in using these platforms bearing in mind that I offer my own web design service but it’s great because you are taking steps to developing or launching your business.

Hiring a Web Designer

This is the part where I come in. Hiring a web designer is all about the relationship your build first, not the website. You are likely to be making a sizeable investment for your business, but you will be hiring a professional to help you get your brand online and get a build a professional website for your business. A website that reflects your business in the right light.

When I speak to clients about a website, I talk about their business first, what they are looking to do and what their business plan is for the coming years. The reason I do this is because I am building a relationship with them and at the same time, they are getting to know me and what value I can add to their business going forward. I am always listening as well and getting a better understanding of the business too!

I will also talk about the types of websites the client likes (and dislikes) and who their competitors are too. Whist their input is valuable, I will also start to recommend different ideas, styles and also explain what they ‘must have’ in a website that will help their business grow and continue to look professional.

My role is to design, build and develop a website that is effective, converts traffic into business and is in line with the client’s brand identity.

By employing the services of a web designer, you will be paying more but you will get more.

I will often explain to clients that you are paying for my time, expertise and experience to get the perfect website for your business.

If you are starting a new business and looking for a website or maybe looking to change your existing site, please get in touch to see how we can work together.
